Thoughts from an Engineer: Neuralink, The Future, and 9-11 | Today in Space #216

EThis week Alex shares his thoughts on the future ahead of us, and just how weird it's going to get. Neuralink is the obvious front runner, allowing us to interface with the brain at a level unheard of before. Lots of great things for those affected by blindness, deafness, paralysis, memory loss, and stroke complications. But it could be used for a lot of bad too, and we need to start thinking about it ahead of time. The tool called Neurolink is not good or bad, its how its used. This idea of not assigning intent to a tool brings me to the 9-11, and the devastating loss that so many experienced that day in 2001. I share my thoughts as an adult looking back at it since I was experiencing it at as 11 year old. Did the use of a commercial airliner stop me from having an interest in aerospace? Did it prevent me from becoming an Aerospace Engineer? Neuralink Website: https://neuralink.com/ Most recent demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVvmgjBL74w

Galileo Rocket Review, SpaceX's Falcon9 1049B, and Launchapalooza! | TIS#214

EIt's a busy week in space this week! Launchapalooza is upon us with 5 rocket launches planned for the weekend - SpaceX, ULA, RocketLab, and Astra We also have to discuss the Falcon9 B1049 because it has broken the latest threshold for reusability, and we discuss how fast the team is turning these rockets around for flight. Finally, its time for a design review of the 3D printed Galileo Rocket. We've learned so much from iteratively designing this model rocket, and we've found some hidden treasures along the way. We think we've found a way to help us spread love & science to schools & communities that are cutting budgets and losing STEM programs. A New Hope - SpaceX & NASA together, End of an Era, and Self-Care | The Balance TIS213

EHey there Space People! Apologies for the week off - life and COVID finally got the best of me and needed to take care of myself. Now that I've been tested and hydrated again we're back! I share my thoughts on getting tested with THE SWAB and how nobody really knows anything about this virus (including myself). I also share my thoughts on the 'New Hope' of the space industry (and possibly humanity) of SpaceX& NASA finally working together and ending the culture war that's plagued the industry for at least 10 years. I relate the only way I can - by sharing stories of my younger-more-angsty-self learning to be an Aerospace Engineer experiencing the Old Space vs New Space 'culture war' in real time. Just wanted to reflect on my experience 10 years later at the end of an era which values teamwork and an open private-government partnership to tackle the next generation of human spaceflight for NASA. SpaceX Double Fairing Recovery, Tianwen-1 to Mars, and a science-based approach to dealing with bullshit information in our daily lives

EIt was a busy week in space this week! Lots to talk about - China is off to Mars with it's first rover, SpaceX successfully achieved another level of reusability capabilities, the return date for Demo-2 and Astronauts Bob & Doug is official (and soon!). And we have a progress update on our Galileo rocket project after our first design session. Next one is this coming Sunday - follow us on facebook at Today In Space Podcast to get an update when we do. Join us! I also decided to expand on a previous idea from the podcast, the scientific ladder of ideas. The same way that scientific ideas go from a hypothesis to a theory can also help us get better at filtering through the bullshit information in our daily lives. It's helped me, and if it helps even one other person - it's worth sharing! Have a good week - be well! This week we're covering the Perseverance Rover aka Mars 2020 Rover mission. Learn more about this incredible feat of engineering, including when it's expected to launch, some of the challenges the team has faced, and of course the science we're expected to see if and when this mission is successful. I compiled all my favorite facts and information on WHY this mission is important. It's primed to blow us all away when it gets to the surface of the Red Planet - and we wish NASA and the United Launch Alliance luck launching on time under these pandemic conditions.
