40 percent of women in the U.S. have dense breast tissue, which can hide abnormalities in mammograms. These women may qualify for a secondary test using ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound Screening) technology, which is now available at UAB. Stefanie Woodard, DO discusses this innovative test that can help women with dense breasts be more accurately tested for breast cancer, and that when combined with mammography, can significantly improved readers' detection of breast cancers in women with dense breast tissue without substantially affecting specificity.
