Recovery and rebuild are the themes of all major political parties in this election campaign. In responding to Covid-19, governments worldwide have borrowed huge amounts of money at cheap rates. In New Zealand, debt is now at 31 percent of GDP; and is expected to peak at 58 percent of GDP in 2024. Taranaki to defend Ranfurly Shield against Otago

This weekend fans will be back on the side lines as the Taranaki Bulls defend the Ranfurly Shield against Otago. In the first live sports event since much of the country moved to Level 1, up to 2500 punters are expected to line the stands at Inglewood's TET Stadium. The Bulls are defending the shield which they won from Canterbury last weekend. Laurie Mains is a former All Blacks coach and was the Otago coach from 1984-1991 and Graham Mourie is a Former All Black Captain and played for Taranaki from 1975 to 1982.

Severe gales and heavy rain will affect much of the country this weekend and there could be a fresh dusting of snow for some of the ski fields in the North and South Islands. MetService is describing the forecast as a "significant severe weather event", driven by extremely low pressure to the south of the country. Chris Brandolino a meteorologist at NIWA speaks to Susie Ferguson.
