In a major success for NAHU and Medicare beneficiaries across the country, the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed HR 2564, the Medicare Enrollment Protection Act, which would establish COBRA as creditable coverage for the purpose of Medicare. On this week’s episode of the Healthcare Happy Hour, John Greene and Chris Hartmann discuss what exactly what is in the bill, the journey so far, and what it will take to pass the bill into law.

GOP Introduces New COVID-19 Bill as Potential Shutdown Looms on the Horizon

This week marks the official end of August recess for both the House and Senate as members of Congress returned to the nation’s capital. Democrats and Republicans left Washington at the beginning of August without a bipartisan agreement on the next legislative coronavirus response package. On this week’s episode of the Healthcare Happy Hour, John Greene and Chris Hartmann discuss the potential for a fourth coronavirus response package, as well as the possibility of a government shutdown at the end of the month. Note: This episode was recorded on September 9. Since then, the new Republican proposal was introduced in the Senate but failed to pass.

Last week the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, or CCIIO, held a first of its kind virtual roundtable ahead of this year’s open enrollment in the exchanges. The event was hosted by CCIIO’s longest serving director Randy Pate and the deputy director of the small business and agent/broker innovation division Dean Mohs. The event was attended by over 70 agents and brokers from across the country as well as our own Marcy M. Buckner. On this week’s episode of the Healthcare Happy Hour, Marcy discusses the event in detail.
