TWiRT Ep. 482 - Combine & Control with Josh Bohn and Josh Jones

With more combined AM, FM, and TV transmitter sites, safe, effective, and secure monitoring and control of those sites has never been more important. When several transmitters are fed into a combiner, then to a master antenna, great damage is possible if something goes wrong. That’s where detailed analysis, careful installation, and custom scripting with sanity checks all come into play. Josh Bohn, along with Josh Jones and other associates are providing such monitoring and control systems to FM and TV broadcasters, and they’re sharing some of their experiences with us. Plus Josh Jones talks about repairing older equipment with parts made of non-obtainium. TWiRT Ep. 481 - Essential Community Radio with Ernesto Aguilar

Community Radio - what is it? And how's it doing? Surprisingly well! Ernesto Aguilar is the Program Director at the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. He’s bullish on Community Radio - often run by volunteers - addressing the specific local and regional issues, arts, and concerns of people in a station’s coverage area. Chris Tobin joins in with specific advice on studio design that addresses the particular workflow you’ll find at many Community Broadcasters. TWiRT Ep. 477 - Artists in the Application of Science with Ed Bukont

Ed Bukont knows a few things because he’s seen a few things. Designing and building broadcast studios never grows old for Ed, because no two studios are ever exactly the same. Ed asks, “What are you trying to do here?” - a question that’s far more important than “What do you want?” Ed shares some of the successful strategies he’s learned in dealing with individuals and with large bureaucracies while integrating useful technology into audio studios.

TWiRT Ep. 475 - Intercom over IP with Martin Dyster

Seems there’s almost nothing we can’t accomplish over Internet Protocol (IP) these days - at least in terms of information, control, and media. Broadcasters and event producers are benefitting by moving their Intercom systems to IP - a technology we’re calling “IoIP” for “Intercom over IP”. Martin Dyster has over 30 years working with “comms” systems in television, radio, theatre, and sporting events. He’s here to educate us about legacy intercom technology, and explain how “matrix-free” IoIP works.

TWiRT Ep. 474 - Broadcasting's All-Digital Future with Sam Matheny

Theodore Hook said, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” If it seems that technology and innovation are impacting our lives at an ever increasing pace, you’re right. Broadcasters, perhaps more than any other industry, must move with technological changes - even if that means defining them. Our guest has been and certainly is now at the forefront of broadcasting technology. Sam Matheny is CTO and Executive Vice President at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). Sam shares his insights for broadcasters as we move into all-digital broadcasting, ATSC 3.0, and artificial intelligence.
