NRL backflips on national anthem

The NRL announced the national anthem would not be played before this year's State of Origin games, and then backflipped following a backlash from fans and the Prime Minister. Plus, Clive Palmer is spending a lot of money on anti-Labor television ads ahead of the Queensland election. We speak to former prime minister Kevin Rudd about the issues with election advertising, as well as reports that a think tank he chairs took money from convicted US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. 'Sexual racism' on Grindr

The day after some of Melbourne's restrictions were lifted after months of lockdown, we chat to locals about what they're going to do now. Plus, we look at what's next for the city, and when the state border might reopen. And with just days to go before the Queensland election, we look at what the major parties have been promising for action on climate change. It turns out ... not much. Also, as part of our ongoing investigation into dating apps, we look at 'sexual racism' on gay dating apps. The most popular of these, Grindr, recently removed its long-criticised ethnicity filter. But gay Australians of colour say this racism runs much deeper than the filter.

Black deaths in custody inquiry

Remember that $100 million scheme the Federal Government promised early last year, to fund the manufacturing of products from recycled plastics? Turns out it hasn't spent any of its funding yet. Plus, New South Wales's special parliamentary inquiry into Indigenous deaths in custody has heard that Indigenous imprisonment rates are higher than ever. There are now calls for major reforms, including a First Nations investigative body. And proposed legislation for Victoria could make it illegal to publish the name of any deceased sexual assault victim in that state. Experts say this would gag the families of victims and mean perpetrators take centre stage. Finally, scientists have found evidence of the existence of water on the moon, and there may even be more of it than we could have guessed.

Universal Basic Income for Australians

Researchers from Macquarie University say giving Australians a guaranteed income - whether they work or not - could lift about half a million people above the poverty line and make a huge dent in inequality. Here's how this 'Universal Basic Income' - would work. Plus, new research by White Ribbon has found that many young men do not consider punching and hitting constitutes domestic violence. And use of long-acting IUDs and contraceptive implants has doubled over the past decade. We chat to Family Planning about all things contraception.

Townsville 'youth curfew' proposal

Queensland's LNP Opposition party says Townsville should impose a curfew on young people to curb crime, with young people who are out late to be taken into policy custody. Experts say this could break international human rights law. Plus, two young people are taking the government to court for their approval of the Adani coal mine, which they say did not consider the health of the reef. And a new report explores how hard young hospitality workers have been hit by the pandemic.

We've talked a lot about safety issues on Tinder, but Grindr has its own concerns. We hear from a man who was sexually abused by another Grinder user, and look at how these safety issues may be tackled. Plus, the inability to get insurance is crippling music festivals across the country. There are now calls for the government to step in and support the industry, so that bands, arts workers and festival organisers can plan for 2021.

Pandemic-year HSC exams are underway

Year 12 HSC exams are underway. We hear from students about what it's been like studying through a pandemic, and how the strict COVID conditions in exam halls are adding an extra layer of stress. Plus, would you be okay with your partner looking through your phone? Experts are worried that the kind of snooping is normalising coercive control and abusive patterns in relationships. And Instagram censored Celeste Barber's parody of a lingerie-model-influencer's half-naked photo, but not the original. We hear from a body positivity activist about how the platform's algorithm favours thin, white people who conform to gender norms.
